My Neighbourhood Walk

These reasons are why I am interested in both Sophie Calle and Tehching Hsieh.

Sophie Calle gets to know the city through the people she follows. (Suite Vénitienne)

She gets to know people by the places they visit, by the actions they deliver and the people they meet.

She follows a man through photography.

She follows him to Venice.

She documents him.

She places him.

What I am interested in is getting to know the people I come across during this process.

What can I find out about a person by the things they have outside of their home?

What can I find out about a person by the things I can see inside their home?

At first this wasn’t my aim.

My initial aim was to walk to my spot, stand there for 10 minutes and then walk back home again.

My initial aim was to examine the transformation of Litten Terrace Park , if there were to be one, throughout the week.

Did this area change within an hour?

Or 2?

Or how about a day?

Alike the photographs Tehching Hsieh took of himself during his One Year Performance,

I set out to take a picture of the park every time I was there.

Alike both of the above artists, I myself too followed a time structure.

However a few times I may not have lived up to my set standards.

I found myself becoming intrinsically interested in the people around me, the people I passed twice every hour.

I began to guess who they were and what their lifestyle was.

It is clear that there is a “peculiar fascination of catching glimpses of ordinary life behind the illuminated windows of tenement houses”

(Colin, Wolf, 2003: 159), well, most certainly within myself.

Late at night, or early hours of the morning, you don't expect to see anyone.

You expect to be alone.

You expect everyone else to indoors and on bed - because that's our culture.

Public spaces aren't used during the late hours of the evening or early hours is the morning.

That's how we use public spaces.

But this expectation of alone.

This knowing that most people are asleep.

This knowing that you are actually alone.

There is no one in sight. No more dog walkers on the field, no more cars, no more people passing by.

Only you, the noises of Chichester, and the darkness.

The public eye are no longer there to support or protect me.

As time goes on things change.

People change.

Plants grow.

Doors are painted another colour.

Architecture is altered. Hair grows.

The city changes.
